Best Houston Electricity Rates

Houston is one of the larger and busier cities in Texas, so it's the target of many electric providers that are competing for local business and consumer accounts by offering the best electric rates possible.

These companies will often approach businesses or even hire sales forces to go door to door and business to business looking for new clients. Although this may seem slighly annoying, it can also be to the consumer's advantage. It helps with education and awareness about what effects electric rates and what choices are available to businesses and individual consumers.

Sometimes, the providers have some flexibility and can offer better than advertised rates, particularly to businesses that tend to use a lot of electricity.  This can be a huge savings and advantage to the business owner or manager that takes the time to investigate.

Use competition to get the best electric rates available - and sometimes even better electric rates than your competitor.

Here are some common questions about getting the best electric rates in Houston.

I've read the Terms of Service, price per Kw/h, etc., and some give more at the beginning, while others are cheaper in the long term. Who do you think is the best electricity provider in Houston? How long did it take for you to get your power back on after Hurricane Ike?

    • ANSWER:

The only way you should decide which provider to choose is through the www.powertochoose.org website. It is a site created by the Public Utility Commission after they deregulated the industry and finally gave us the right to choose our providers. It compares the current rates for every provider. Just click the 'Go Directly To Rates' and put in your zip code. Just make sure you are only looking at Fixed rates. I also wouldn't take a term of less than a year. Then just set a reminder for a year from now to switch again.

As for power after Ike. I was without for over two weeks, but that shouldn't be a factor in choosing your provider. 'Providers' are just resellers of power. They don't own the lines and they aren't the ones who fix the problems. That is all CenterPoint.

  5. QUESTION:

In Houston -Suggestion for - The best electricity company for residential consumption?
We are in switching mode from Atlanta to Houston Sugar land area. Which are the best rates electricity companies? What else we should keep as deciding factors while finalizing the electricity companies . Say like some give cash back/air conditioning maintenance but air conditioning maintenance we many not like to have ...

    • ANSWER:

Go to www.powertochoose.org to compare the rates of the different companies. Then pick the cheapest one. Rates are pretty low now so it maybe good to lock in a rate for two year contract. The company you pick is just the company that sends you the bill so pick the lowest one. The company you pick will have nothing to do with the service of you power lines, that is all done by Centerpoint Energy.

Also from my personal experiance if you choose a month to month rate plan or let your long term contract expire then you can get burned. I let my long term contract expire and it autobmatically went to the month to month rate. I payed double my old rate, right in the middle of summer. I had two months of high bills before I was able to get back to a long term contract.
